EMCOMM News
DSTAR NET
The Southern New Jersey Section ARES-EMCOMM DSTAR Net is held weekly at 2030 hrs (830pm) on the SCERN Network.
The South Counties Emergency Radio Network was funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for the purpose of emergency health-care communications in partnership with the county OEM's, ARES EMCOMM Groups and Medical Coordination Centers in Camden (Cooper Hospital) and Atlantic City (Atlantic Regional Medical Center).
Each county has a 70cm DSTAR Digital Voice and 1.2 GHz Digital Data system. Ours is located at the County EOC in Lindenwold . All members are encouraged to participate and experiment with DSTAR. I do have a few HT's I can loan out for experimentation.
Each repeater can be uses as a stand-alone repeater but they are usually connected together to facilitate section wide coverage. To access the SCERN Network for the net you must operate through a gateway enabled repeater and have your radio configured as such. Currently our repeater is not on the gateway so you'll have to use our neighboring counties, Atlantic, Cumberland or Salem. We anticipate the K2EOC repeater to be on line very soon.
Here is the link to the SCERN website, which provides network information and current frequencies. Members that would like to experiment with DSTAR and eventually operate DSTAR should forward me their names and I will add their call sign to the gateway.

GCARC members note: We have the equipment but it has not been configured and needs ti be installed in the trailer.
BSA Radio Merit Badge Training
Last call...
Is there anyone in the group that would like to become certified by the boyscouts to be a merit badge counselor?... I am taking a one night course on January 12th which will allow me to be a radio merit badge counselor. I could use a few others from the group to help... so who wants to help???? There are many types of merit badges so if you have any interests in addition to radio here is a link showing the various merit badges.

Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System (NBEMS) Info
From Matt Call, N2TXV, Camden County EMCOMM Rep.
The Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System (NBEMS - pronounced "N-beams" in the trade) is a suite of software programs designed for point-to-point, fast, error-free, emergency messaging up to or over 100 miles distant, and takes up a very minimum of space on the ham bands. The system is designed primarily for use on the two-meter band, or on HF with NVIS antennas, where there is a minimum of fading (QSB) to slow down message transfers. Two meters has the advantage that distances long enough to span disaster areas of up to 100 miles can be dependably done with small, portable antennas. In hilly regions, if two meters is not workable over the distances required, NVIS antennas on HF can be employed instead.
The system is comprised of a number of programs that work together:
- fldigi / flarq - digital modem / ARQ file transfer
- flwrap - file encapsulation / compression
- flmsg - ARRL Radiogram & ICS213 message manager
- flrig - rig control program, cooperates with fldigi
The computer soundcard is used as the modem, and other than a simple interface connection between the computer and transceiver, no additional hardware is needed. Versions are available for a variety of operating systems, including Windows (XP or later), Mac OS X, Free-BSD, and Linux. This software was reviewed by the ARRL in QST in 2007.
Here is the link to a webinar from the Atlantic Division ARRL for NBEMS. Please take some time to seriously look at this digital mode. We will be going in this direction with Camden County and I am planning a training session once we have the speaker lined up. The webinar email is at the bottom of this message.
